Mother Caught By Bystanders Trying To Drown Her Baby In An Icy River

Fire & Rescue teams risked their lives to save the woman and her child after bystanders observed the female taking the child into the cold water.

Not everyone who wants to be a mother gets to be one and not everyone who is a mother should be.

Sadly, such is the case of a Virginia mother who was caught dropping her 7-month-old son into the freezing cold Appomattox River in Virginia, according to local police.

The Hopewell Fire & Rescue team risked their lives to save the woman and her child the morning of January 11, 2021.  At around 10:27 am, officers responded to a report of a female and child in the Appomattox River. Before police arrived, bystanders observed the female taking the child into the cold water.

The Hopewell Police Department along with the Hopewell Fire Department responded to the scene and located the female and child in waist-high water. Police officers entered the water, removed the child from the water, and began rendering medical attention. The Hopewell Fire Department was able to resuscitate the child who was transported to VCU Medical Center for further medical attention, according to Lt. Michael Lanford of the Hopewell Police Department in a press release.

The female, later identified as Leslei Kuykendall, had walked further out into the river, was pulled to safety by the Hopewell Fire Department and their rescue boat. She was transported to John Randolph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Jan. 19, 38-year-old Virginia mother Leslei Kuykendall was arrested and charged with attempted murder. She was transported to the Riverside Regional Jail, where she remains held.

Kuykendall has not entered a plea and it's not clear whether she has retained an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
The baby boy, says Langford, "was released from VCU Hospital and is doing well."
