18 Herbs and Vegetables You Can Grow on Your Porch or Patio

If you’d like to maintain a garden, but don’t have lots of space, you can always turn to container gardening.

As far as how much soil you need per plant, a one gallon pot is a good starting place and keep in mind that a plant can only grow as large as its container. Therefore, you will get a smaller plant and thus fewer peppers from a plant grown in a one gallon pot, compared to a 5 gallon pot.

So, if you want to grow more food, use bigger pots. Here is a good way to make your own soil.

Additionally, the larger container will require less frequent watering. Rule of thumb: The smaller the container, the quicker it will dry out.

Without further ado, here are 18 plants that will grow well in containers:

Lavender

Basil

Thyme

Lemon Balm

Peppermint

Rosemary

Tomatoes

Lettuce

Radishes

Eggplant

Spinach

Kale

Chard

Peas

Carrots

Cucumbers

Zucchini

Garlic

Peppers

Employ the technique of square foot gardening (which is usually used in raised beds) when it comes to smaller plants such as carrots, spinach, and lettuce. The wider the diameter of your container, the more individual plants you can fit without overcrowding.

See the square foot gardening graphic below. Each square represents approximately one square foot of soil space.
