Today’s Challenge: Can you solve this without using a calculator?

Mental exercise is something that everyone can benefit from.

It comes in many different shapes and forms – from crossword puzzles and sudoku to playing board games with your loved ones. Personally, I like to search for new brainteasers online. That’s how you get a good variation.

On the web, you’ll find riddles, visual puzzles, memory challenges, etc. The sky is the limit. With that said, I thought I would invite you to a fun test today!

In our daily lives, we use math more often than we might think. We are always making small calculations in our heads.

However, they are often simple equations, how much to pay at the store, the days left until spring break, etc.

Refresh your memory

The slightly more difficult math you learned back in school has slowly faded away.

That’s why today’s challenge fits so perfectly. It gives us the chance to refresh our math skills, which after all, are still there, somewhere far in the back of the head.

Solve the number in your head

Here is a math problem that is actually quite simple, but you must remember the math rules to solve it. Namely, the order of operations.

Ready? Here is today’s challenge!

Here is the correct answer

The correct answer is 1.

How did we get 1? You might ask.

As the order of operations states, you have to start with multiplication.

So 1 x 2 = 2.

Then we are left with a simple equation: 1 + 1 + 1 – 2 – 0.

Basically, we have 3 – 2, which of course, totals 1.

The solution is quite easy to come up with. However, you must start by calculating the multiplication – and not everyone remembers that vital rule.
