When his mother sees his apartment, she’s horrified. But when he tears down the walls, no one can believe their eyes.

When 37-year-old Christian Schallert from Austria bought a 24 m² apartment overlooking the rooftops of Barcelona, his mother was horrified. Not only did you have to climb 100 stairs to reach it, but the tiny living space wasn't exactly what she had in mind for her son.

This is what the apartment looked like beforehand: The bathroom is back behind the green wall. Plaster is crumbling from the walls and swathes of wallpaper are missing.
And here's what it looks like after Christian finished his renovation. He removed the bathroom walls and installed a transparent shower stall. For his new apartment he decided to be inspired by techniques often used in boats - everything can be tucked away into the walls! The front door near the back of the room is still in the same place, but everything else looks completely different.

It is amazing what all is hidden in this tiny room: The kitchen and refrigerator are snugged behind this door.

The dining table also drops down from the opposite wall.

The bed is stored underneath the balcony when he doesn't need it and can be pulled out easily when he's ready to call it a night.

If Christian is in the mood for a couch, he pulls the bed only partway out, pulls out his favorite book or unveils his TV, and he's ready to chill.

He is constantly opening, closing, pulling, pushing some part of his new home. But that is exactly what he loves best: It is always changing.

"People always ask how I can eat so many sweets and stay so fit. I live in an action-apartment," he said. "I'm constantly moving things, burning calories."
One of Christian's friends calls it the "LEGO-Apartment" because everything is stacked on top of each other.

Here is a video of Christian introducing his new home:

This isn't everyone's dream apartment, but after the odd night out in Barcelona, what a paradise to come home to. There are definitely some space-saving tricks in there that you could use in your own home as well!
