The good folks at a 24-hour emergency animal hospital are used to sometimes treating the occasional injured wild animal people bring in. But when someone brought in a large bald eagle, even these experienced vets weren’t prepared for just how big this magnificent animal was. They appropriately named him ‘Freedom’ and promptly got to work treating him.
Freedom had a broken wing, probably from being hit by a vehicle.
He arrived in a box, and was much bigger than the vets expected.
ust look at how big his talons are compared to the vet’s hand!
The team tried to keep him calm while the doctors inspected his injuries.
Luckily, he kept calm while being treated for an open fracture.
Freedom had quite a wingspan.
What a magnificent animal.
Thankfully, the vets were able to get the bald eagle patched up. One of them posted this update:
Once we’ve stabilized an animal/checked them over, we call the wildlife rehab centre in our city and they come p/u the animals. They provide long-term treatments and will attempt to rehab them in the wild again. A bad wing break like this (open fracture) is difficult to repair and can sometimes result in a wing amputation which prevents release. A wild bird does not always do well in captivity so, quite often, humane euthanasia is a common route. For this particular fellow, he went to the centre and I’m personally crossing my fingers that they’ll be able to help him and give him another few years of life. Hopefully he stays away from vehicles in the future…
Hopefully Freedom will be able to heal up at the rehab center and be released back into the wild. I have a feeling this is a night the people at the animal hospital will not soon forget!
