People think that monkeys are not bright. Well, I hate to disappoint you, but monkeys are just as intelligent as humans.
A certain chimpanzee knew human sign language and could communicate very well with humans through sign language. Washoe’s caretaker had missed work for a couple of weeks due to a miscarriage. However, Washoe was very unhappy with her caretaker, Kat. When Kat returned she told the chimp that she had lost her baby, Washoe empathized with Kat, having lost two children herself. The first because of a heart defect and the second due to staph infection.
Washoe was given a ten-month-old chimp to care for, and she offered the baby to Kat to make up for the baby she had lost. Of course, Kat could not take the baby chimp, let Washoe keep the baby and care for it.
